Setting up DKIM in Mimecast helps protect your domain against email spoofing and improves email authentication. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) adds a digital signature to outgoing emails, allowing receiving mail servers to verify their authenticity and integrity. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of configuring DKIM in Mimecast, publishing the **required DNS records**, and testing your setup to ensure successful email authentication.

## What DKIM Is and Why It Matters for Mimecast Email Authentication

DKIM, or DomainKeys Identified Mail, is an email authentication standard that helps prove that an email was authorized by the domain owner and was not altered in transit. _In a Mimecast environment, DKIM works by adding a digital signature to outbound messages_. The receiving [mail server](https://www.cloudflare.com/learning/email-security/what-is-a-mail-server/) then checks that signature against a public DKIM key published in DNS as a TXT record.

At a technical level, DKIM uses a cryptographic hash of selected message headers and body content. Mimecast signs the message with a private key, while the recipient side retrieves the public DKIM key from DNS to verify the signature. If the cryptographic hash calculated by the receiving validation system matches the DKIM signature, the message is considered authentic and intact.

DKIM is especially important when used with SPF and DMARC. SPF, or Sender Policy Framework, confirms whether a sending host is authorized to **send for a domain**. DKIM confirms message integrity through the cryptographic hash and signature. DMARC then evaluates DKIM and SPF alignment to determine how receiving systems should handle suspicious mail, including whether messages should be delivered, rejected, or treated as quarantined messages.

For Mimecast customers, DKIM strengthens email authentication, improves email security, and helps reduce [email spoofing](https://thehackernews.com/2017/12/email-spoofing-client.html). It also supports broader DNS authentication controls, DMARC reporting, compliance requirements, and brand protection initiatives such as BIMI, or Brand Indicators for Message Identification.

## Prerequisites Before Configuring DKIM in Mimecast

Before starting the DKIM setup in Mimecast, confirm that your domain, DNS access, and mail flow are ready. **DKIM configuration** depends on both Mimecast settings and an accurate [DNS record](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/dns-records) published by the domain owner.

![Dmarc Check 4586](https://media.mailhop.org/dmarcreport/dmarc-check-4586-1793267088261.jpg)

### Confirm Your Sending Architecture

Identify how outbound messages leave your organization. Common integrations include Microsoft 365, On-Premise Servers, hybrid mail environments, and Mimecast services such as Email Security - MX or Email Security Cloud Integrated. Your message routing must ensure outbound messages pass through Mimecast before delivery to external recipients; otherwise, Mimecast cannot apply the DKIM signature.

If you use Microsoft 365, confirm that connectors route outbound mail through Mimecast. If you use On-Premise Servers, verify the smart host or relay configuration. Also review MX, SPF, and DMARC records so the full email authentication chain is consistent.

### Verify DNS and Administrative Access

You need access to the Mimecast Administration Console and permission to edit your **public DNS zone**. The DKIM [public key](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/public-key.asp) must be published as a TXT record under a selector-based hostname, such as:

selector1.\_domainkey.example.com

This [TXT Record](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TXT%5Frecord) is the public DKIM key that recipient servers use to validate signed DKIM messages. _Because DNS authentication depends on accurate public DNS, mistakes in the txt record, selector, or hostname can break DKIM validation_.

Also confirm existing SPF and DMARC settings. Your SPF record should include Mimecast as an authorized **sender where appropriate**, while your DMARC DNS record should reference the desired addresses for DMARC reports.

#### Useful Mimecast Tools and Related Services

Depending on your licensing, you may also review related capabilities such as Targeted Threat Protection, Impersonation Protect, Attachment Protect, Brand Exploit Protect, CyberGraph, and the Human Risk Command Center. Administrative tools such as the Mimecast Account Assessment Report, audit logs, reporting dashboards, Guides & Resources, and troubleshoot guides can help validate the broader email security posture. End-user tools such as Mimecast for Outlook, Mimecast Essentials for Outlook, Mimecast for Mac, Mimecast Mobile, Mimecast Personal Portal, Mimecast Security Agent, Connect Application, and IrM Launchpad may be relevant to user experience, but DKIM signing is primarily managed at the gateway and DNS level.

## Step-by-Step: Generating and Publishing Your Mimecast DKIM DNS Record

The exact interface may vary slightly by account type and region, but the DKIM setup generally follows the same process in the **Mimecast Administration Console**.

### Step 1: Open DNS Authentication Settings in Mimecast

Sign in to the Mimecast Administration Console with an administrator account. Navigate to the gateway or email security area where [DNS authentication](https://dmarcreport.com/blog/what-is-dns-authentication-and-why-does-it-matter/) policies and outbound signing settings are managed. Look for DKIM, DNS Authentication, or outbound DKIM signing options.

Mimecast may separate inbound messages validation from outbound messages signing. For DKIM setup, focus on outbound signing first. Inbound DNS authentication policies are useful for checking DKIM, SPF, and DMARC on mail received from external senders, but outbound DKIM signing is what protects your own domain.

### Step 2: Select the Domain and Generate a DKIM Key

Choose the domain you want Mimecast to sign. Mimecast will generate a selector and a key pair. The private key **remains within Mimecast**, while the public DKIM key is provided for DNS publication.

The generated DKIM DNS record normally includes:

- A selector hostname, such as mimecast2024.\_domainkey.example.com
- A TXT record value beginning with v=DKIM1
- A public DKIM key value, usually identified with p=
- Optional tags defining key type or usage

This public DKIM key is essential. Recipient servers retrieve it from DNS, compare it against the DKIM signature, and validate the cryptographic hash. _If the txt record is missing, malformed, or published under the wrong selector, DKIM authentication will fail_.

### Step 3: Publish the TXT Record in DNS

In your DNS provider’s portal, create a TXT record using the exact hostname, selector, and public key generated by Mimecast. Enter the hostname in the format specified by Mimecast, typically using a selector followed by .\_domainkey and your domain name. Some DNS providers automatically append the domain name, so check the final hostname to avoid duplication.

The record value must contain the complete public DKIM key supplied by Mimecast. Do not use an example selector or placeholder key as your actual DNS record. After saving the record, allow time for [DNS propagation](https://www.digicert.com/faq/dns/what-is-dns-propagation) and verify that the published value **matches the generated configuration**.

For example:

- **Type**: TXT Record
- **Name/Host**: selector1.\_domainkey
- **Value**: v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=PUBLICKEYVALUE
- **TTL**: Use your standard DNS TTL, such as 300 or 3600 seconds

Avoid adding extra quotation marks unless your DNS provider requires them. Some DNS portals automatically append the root domain, while others require the fully qualified domain name. After publishing the dns record, allow time for propagation.

### Step 4: Verify DNS and Configure the Outbound Signing Policy

After publishing the [DKIM TXT record](https://dmarcreport.com/blog/dkim-txt-records-how-to-properly-configure-your-email-authentication/), verify that it is publicly accessible and that its hostname and public key match the values generated in Mimecast. Use Mimecast’s available DNS validation tools or an external DNS lookup tool to confirm that the record resolves correctly.

Next, open the Mimecast Administration Console and locate the DNS Authentication settings. Create or review the DNS Authentication – Outbound Signing definition for the domain you want to authenticate. Confirm that the definition uses the **correct selector and signing** configuration.

Then, create or update the applicable outbound DNS Authentication policy. Associate the correct signing definition with the intended sending domain and configure the policy according to your organization’s mail flow requirements. Save and enable the policy as required by your Mimecast configuration.

Once the policy is active, send a test message to an external mailbox and inspect its headers to confirm that Mimecast has added a [DKIM signature](https://docs.mapp.com/docs/dkim-signature). Verify that the signature passes authentication before proceeding to the next step.

## Enabling, Testing, and Validating DKIM Signing in Mimecast

After the TXT record is published and visible in DNS, return to Mimecast and enable DKIM signing for the domain. Mimecast may provide a validation or “check DNS” function to confirm that the public **DKIM key is reachable**.

### Test with Real Outbound Messages

_Send test outbound messages from your domain to external mailboxes such as Microsoft 365, Gmail, or another independent recipient system_. Then inspect the message headers. You should see a DKIM-Signature header added by Mimecast, along with authentication results showing DKIM pass, SPF pass or neutral depending on the path, and DMARC pass if alignment is correct.

The message headers should show the DKIM selector, signing domain, [cryptographic hash function](https://www.ssl.com/article/what-is-a-cryptographic-hash-function/) references, and signature details. A successful result means the recipient side located the public DKIM key in the txt record and validated the signature.

### Validate DMARC, BIMI, and Reporting Signals

Once DKIM is passing, review your DMARC reports to confirm that legitimate mail streams are aligned. If you plan to implement BIMI, DKIM and DMARC are important parts of your email authentication strategy. However, passing DKIM alone does not establish BIMI eligibility. BIMI generally requires a DMARC policy set to enforcement (p=quarantine or p=reject), along with compliance with the **applicable BIMI requirements** for the domain, logo, and any required certificate.

You can also compare Mimecast reporting, audit logs, and DMARC DNS record results to confirm that mail flow, message routing, and delivery are behaving as expected. For advanced environments, [application programming interface](https://www.coursera.org/in/articles/what-is-an-api) (API)-based integrations may help export reporting data into SIEM, compliance, or monitoring platforms. DANE may also be part of a broader DNS-based protection strategy, although it serves a different purpose than DKIM.

## Troubleshooting Common DKIM Mimecast Setup Issues

DKIM failures in Mimecast usually come down to DNS publication errors, mail flow bypassing Mimecast, or alignment problems with DMARC.

### DKIM Fails Because the TXT Record Is Incorrect

The most common issue is an incorrect txt record. Confirm the selector hostname, public DKIM key, and TXT Record value exactly match what Mimecast generated. Check whether your DNS provider duplicated the domain name or split the public DKIM key incorrectly. A broken public DKIM key prevents the **recipient validation system** from confirming the cryptographic hash and signature.

Use [DNS lookup](https://www.ibm.com/think/topics/dns-lookup) tools to confirm the dns record is publicly visible. If the TXT record cannot be found, DKIM authentication will fail even if Mimecast is signing correctly.

### DKIM Signature Is Missing from Outbound Messages

If outbound messages do not contain a DKIM signature, confirm that DKIM signing is enabled for the correct domain in Mimecast. Also verify that the messages are actually routed through Mimecast. Mail sent directly from Microsoft 365, On-Premise Servers, applications, scanners, or third-party platforms may bypass **Mimecast and remain unsigned**.

Review mail flow connectors, message routing rules, and Mimecast policies. Application senders may require separate SPF updates, DKIM configuration, or dedicated subdomains.

![What Is Dmarc 4856](https://media.mailhop.org/dmarcreport/what-is-dmarc-4856-1793267338003.jpg)

### DMARC Still Fails Even Though DKIM Passes

A DKIM pass does not always mean DMARC passes. DMARC requires alignment between the signing domain and the visible From domain. If Mimecast signs with one domain but the message uses another From domain, DMARC may fail.

Check the Authentication-Results header, [DMARC](https://dmarcreport.com/) reports, and the DMARC DNS record. _Confirm SPF alignment as well, since DMARC can pass through aligned SPF or aligned DKIM_. If legitimate mail is being rejected or quarantined, temporarily review policies before moving to stricter enforcement.

### Inbound DNS Authentication Policies Are Too Strict

Mimecast can also evaluate inbound messages using DNS authentication policies for DKIM, SPF, and DMARC. If inbound messages are incorrectly held, rejected, or treated as quarantined messages, review the inbound policy configuration. Strong protection is important, but overly aggressive policies can affect delivery from partners with **poor email authentication**.

Use Mimecast audit logs, reporting, and troubleshoot guides to determine whether failures are caused by DKIM, SPF, DMARC, impersonation controls, Targeted Threat Protection, Impersonation Protect, or Attachment Protect. Adjust policies carefully so your organization maintains [email security](https://dmarcreport.com/blog/why-email-security-matters-and-how-to-get-it-right/) without disrupting legitimate communication.
